Tarke Ranch

Frederick Tarke was born in Westphalia, Germany in 1824. By 1888, he has immigrated to Sutter County and founded a ranch of over 3000 acres. 

Tarke arrived in the United States by way of sea voyage. He worked on the Mississippi river as a deck hand and pilot for steamboats. He eventually traveled across the great plains to arrive in California. 

He established a 3000 acre farm of tule, hill, and valley land. He had 100 head of horses, 500 head of cattle, and 3000 sheep. 

More will be discovered about Frederick Tarke and his contribution to California’s Agricultural History. This information was submitted by his descendant, Jim Tarke.
