Farm Agencies

There are numerous agencies serving farmers in Yuba and Sutter County. To the untrained eye, these different groups are confusing. In this section, there are brief descriptions of each agency and their purpose. All agencies are independent of one another.

University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), Yuba-Sutter Counties:

The University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE)  does research and regulate growers. They cooperate with the Agricultural Commissioner’s Office regarding a variety of agricultural related subjects.

Across California, the University of California’s 64 Cooperative Extension offices are local problem-solving centers. They are the bridge between local issues and the power of UC research. Their county-based staff is part of the community – they live and work in the areas they serve.

More than 300 campus-based specialists and county-based farm, home and youth advisors work as teams to bring practical, unbiased, science-based answers to problems across California.

As part of the agricultural community, they help farmers develop more-efficient growing methods, solve pest management problems and develop crops and irrigation methods that use less water. And, as stewards of the land, they develop wildfire education and help preserve natural areas and farmland.

The UCCE works in full partnership with federal, state, county and private resources. They are stewards, problem-solvers, catalysts, collaborators, and educators.

The Yuba-Sutter Farm Bureau (Membership organization)

The Farm Bureau is a private membership organization.  UCCE and the Agricultural Commissioners attend their meetings and provide Ag related updates and support.
The Farm Bureau advocates for sensible land-use policies. It preserves farming and ranching as a way of life for future generations. They protect the county’s water supply and local water quality. They work to empower its members with information. They are also responsible for reaching out to many different organizations and entities to seek solutions to often complex problems. They share the story of agriculture with those who may only know their food from the grocery store. They provide individual farmers and ranchers the opportunity to unite with others who share their concerns and interests. And Finally, they speak with one powerful voice for agriculture at the local, state and national levels.

Sutter and Yuba Agricultural Commissioners

The Sutter and Yuba County Agricultural commissioners are regulatory agencies. Appointed by the Board of Supervisors to a four-year term, the County Agricultural Commissioner is responsible for the local administration of certain federal, state, and local laws and regulations which protect the public’s health, safety and welfare, the environment, agriculture, and the consumer. The Agricultural Commissioner is also the County Sealer of Weights and Measures.

USDA Farm Service Agency (USDA FSA)

A federal program that provides services or disaster aid to farmers. USDA FSA doesn’t have much interaction with Ag Commissioners unless the Ag Commissioner Declares a Disaster.

California Century Farms

California Century Farms, sponsored by the Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County, is an honorific program. We hope to work with the organizations detailed above to preserve and protect the histories and legacies of Californian Agricultural Families.
